About Penny Shure
Born and raised in Syracuse, New York & a graduate of Syracuse University I am now back here unexpectedly to help my aging mother navigate her own wellness issues. My dance journey began at the age of five and has never stopped except for a few toe and foot issues which led to my becoming an expert in foot fitness. Using food as medicine began for me when my father developed incurable brain cancer diagnosed in 1977. A sugar-free, process-free, vegetable-based diet helped keep him alive for close to two years after he was told to get his affairs in order and from then on I had a keen interest in nutrition.
Life without a father affected most of my adult decisions but despite pitfalls, bad relationships, and challenging choices I managed to raise two fabulous sons, pivot to a new career as a Pilates instructor after becoming a single mom in 2003, and find my passion and specialty in osteoporosis awareness, fracture prevention, trauma recovery, and seeing the glass as half-full instead of half-empty, which I learned from my father.
I am blessed to have survived a traumatic low birthweight of 1.7 pounds as a 3-month premie so I have never taken my body for granted. My mother gave me dance, my father taught me optimism, and being a mother taught me how to love without conditions. It is ironic that Randi Braun referred to me as a "founding mother of Pilates in America". That is the kind of patience and love I bring to my students and how I approach life.
I am a proud Jewish woman and do my best to embrace the core values of my faith and live with gratitude, kindness, and light in my heart. This is a new chapter in my life and I hope you become part of my story.
