This week I had the privilege of serving on the American Institute of Biological Sciences Peer Review of Proposals submitted to the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command in Reston, Virginia. I was a consumer reviewer on the osteoporosis and bone related illnesses panel. This gave me the opportunity to speak not just on my own behalf, but for all of my clients and for all Americans who suffer from a bone related disease. It was an honor and a tremendous experience for me to be part of something bigger than myself. I had the chance to discuss grant proposals with scientists and doctors who might not have otherwise considered how the work being reviewed for funding will truly effect the emotional well being and overall health of the patients they are trying to help. Although the work I reviewed is confidential, I can tell you that it was very re-assuring to know how thoroughly the government studies and works with scientists in order to find cures for disease. This work will not only benefit the brave members of our military and veterans, but also their families and the general population. It is all very cutting edge!
